What attracted you to the Seifert Scholars program?
The opportunity to conduct uninterrupted research throughout the summer, guided by such accomplished scientists, was the primary reason why the Seifert Scholars program stood out to me. As a student planning to attend medical school, I recognize the importance of developing a deep understanding of the intricacies of science. This opportunity would allow me to gain valuable insights into specific cellular and molecular processes used in the lab, which I can carry forward into my future career.
What is your research?
Much of my research consists of working with recombinant proteins that are used to identify specific localization components of glucose in trypanosomes. Trypanosomes or T. brucei are special in the way they take up and use glucose in glycolysis, and it is important for us to further our understanding of this process.
What has been the impact of the Seifert Scholars on your career?
The Seifert Scholars program has given me insight into the laboratory side of science, which can be extremely valuable when applied to the clinical side of science, my goal as a future doctor. Not only has this program provided me with this knowledge and experience, but it has also allowed me to connect with and learn from highly intelligent scientists who have had a positive impact on me in many ways.
What is the next step of your career?
After graduating from Clemson, I plan to attend medical school to pursue a career as an MD. I hope to continue conducting research during and after medical school, alongside working as a full-time physician. While I am not entirely certain about the exact path I will take in medicine, I am currently leaning toward a career in surgery.
