I was attracted to the Seifert Scholars program because I wanted to be a part of the prestigious group of students here at Clemson while furthering my research. I was excited to have the opportunity to be funded while continuing my project and doing what I love. I absolutely love being able to stay at my home institution and with my lab family for my last summer at Clemson.
šš”šš š¢š¬ š²šØš®š« š«šš¬ššš«šš”?
My lab, the Fierro Lab, studies Plasmodium falciparum, the causative agent of human malaria. We study the blood stage of this pathogen, so my research revolves heavily around it. Plasmodium falciparum exports thousands of proteins in order to remodel the human red blood cell. I specifically study the purpose of export motifs in proteins that are unexpected to have them.

This opportunity will allow me to be part of a select group of ambitious individuals, setting me apart from other applicants in my next steps. It will give me more in-depth research skills and further my knowledge in producing independent research. I will be able to grow as a researcher, and it will be a key factor in preparing me for graduate school.

Iām applying to MD-PhD programs across the country this cycle. I hope to pursue an MD-PhD and research pediatric genetic disorders.
