Biosketch

Shanari Buckner earned her Bachelor of Science in Biology from Coastal Carolina University, with a concentration in genetics, cellular biology, and molecular biology. During her time there, her undergraduate research in the Gamberi laboratory focused on identifying genetic modifiers of the Bicaudal-C gene using Drosophila melanogaster as a model organism. Her work involved fly husbandry and imaging and morphometric analysis of microdissected organs. She also contributed to research projects investigating microbial communities in South Carolina coastal waters and molecular ecology in marine invertebrates.

Throughout her training, Shanari presented her research at numerous regional and statewide scientific meetings, including the South Carolina INBRE Science Symposium and the South Carolina Academy of Science, where she was selected to deliver oral presentations on her Drosophila research. At Coastal Carolina, her accomplishments include receiving the Disease Modeling Research Scholarship and serving as a Research Fellow. In addition to research, she has demonstrated a commitment to leadership and community engagement through public health outreach and volunteer service focused on improving health and well-being.

Research

Shanari is interested in using model organisms and the application of molecular techniques to investigate complex biological processes and translate fundamental discoveries into insights relevant to human health. She will be joining the Mackay-Anholt Lab assisting on current projects.
