Dr. Avena received his BS. in Biochemistry and PhD in Chemistry from the National University of Cordoba, Argentina. He performed postdoctoral studies at the Laboratory of Physical Chemistry and Colloid Science, Wageningen University, The Netherlands and held numerous positions (Laboratoire de Géophysique Interne et Tectonophysique, France; University of Santiago de Compostela, Spain; University of Geneva, Switzerland; Huazhong Agricultural University, China). His research focuses on the chemistry of surfaces of solid substances in contact with an aqueous medium, and in the environment, studying their role in adsorption, desorption and mobilization processes of contaminants and environmental nutrients. His work also focuses on studies of glyphosate, emerging contaminants such as caffeine, antibiotics, tetracycline, and substances such as phosphate, arsenic, fluorine and others whose environmental mobility is affected by the presence of the surface of minerals. He has received multiple awards, including the Konex award in 2023.
