Drew Whitman

2024 Whittman

Drew is a Junior at Western Carolina University. he hopes to gain exposure to the broader world of academic research, as well as deepening his knowledge in the field of analytical chemistry. His past individual research projects have been instrumental in developing my confidence in the research process, and moving beyond my current university would allow him to learn and participate in new lab settings and manifest his aspirations of professional scientific study. Drew will be studying the solution-, droplet-, and gas-phase physicochemical properties of a range of opioids (primarily fentanyl analogues). This will focus on experimental/chemical contributions to the observance of prototropic isomers (i.e., “protomers”) by various types of ion mobility spectrometry. In addition to experimental aspects, a significant component of computational modeling will aid in elucidating the methods of ionization, mobility separations, and gas-phase dissociation.
