I was attracted to the Seifert Scholars program because it provides me the opportunity to continue my research in Dr. Ingram-Smith’s lab full-time during the summer. Being able to focus on research without the demands of coursework will allow me to make meaningful progress toward my project goals and develop new laboratory skills.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

I’m researching a eukaryotic pathogen, Entamoeba Histolytica, which causes amoebic dysentery in about 100 million people annually. The pathogen has two life stages, the growing amoeba form and the dormant cyst. My project focuses on identifying and characterizing genes that are upregulated as E. histolytica converts from amoeba to cyst during encystation.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

This program has given me invaluable experience in laboratory research, which will greatly support me in my long term career goal of becoming a physician with a strong foundation in research. Additionally, it has helped me develop my ability to understand experimental design and communicate research findings, skills that will help me throughout my medical career.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
