Most importantly, I wanted to learn more. I was searching for a deeper understanding of concepts I\u2019ve learned in class, and I believe that knowledge must be gained from physically conducting scientific research. In addition, as an aspiring Pharmacologist, I wanted to experience the life of daily research. It was an amazing opportunity to do so while advancing my findings in the Dou Lab. <\/p>\n<p><strong>What is your research?<\/strong><br \/>\nI conduct research on an extracellular parasitic protozoan, Histomonas meleagridis. This parasite causes histomonosis in gallinaceous birds, with especially high expression in turkeys. My project focuses on a protein produced by the parasites called LysM. We believe that this protein aids the parasite in evading the host cell&#8217;s immune function. We hope to develop a vaccine against Histomonas meleagridis using this protein.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What has been the impact of the Seifert Scholars on your career?<\/strong><br \/>\nThis program has provided me with valuable knowledge in laboratory research and molecular biology. I have learned how to use complex molecular machinery, improved laboratory techniques, and confirmed that I desire a future in research. Seifert Scholars amplified my passion for scientific inquiry and will open doors to future endeavors I may pursue.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What is the next step of your career?<\/strong><br \/>\nFollowing graduation, I plan to attend medical school and pursue an MD\/Ph.D in Pharmacology with the goal of working in research and drug development.
