In this lab, students will:
• Discuss mixtures vs solutions, chemical vs physical properties, separation of mixtures, types of chromatography, gel electrophoresis
• Extract dyes from various candies
• Pour and load a practice gel
• Load extracted dyes onto an electrophoresis gel
• Analyze gels to:
Classify dyes as pure solutions or mixtures
Rank the dyes in order of increasing molecular size
• Separate the dyes in Kool-Aid by using column chromatography:
Load the Kool-Aid on the column
Load solvents of increasing polarity on the column to separate dyes
Classify the dyes according to increasing polarity
• Utilize micropipettes, gel electrophoresis equipment, chromatography columns
